Prosthetics & Orthotics for Fall Activities: Staying Comfortable as the Weather Changes

Fall in Central Florida may not bring freezing temperatures, but the change in weather can still affect how your body feels—and that includes how your prosthesis or orthosis fits and functions.

Whether you're spending more time outdoors, getting back into your favorite activities, or simply noticing a change in comfort, fall is a great time to check in on your prosthetic or orthotic needs.

How Changing Weather Can Affect Prosthetic Comfort

Temperature and humidity can influence your body throughout the day. Changes in swelling, sweating, and skin sensitivity may affect how your prosthetic socket or orthosis feels.

A fit that felt comfortable during one season may feel different as your activity level or body changes. This doesn't necessarily mean something is wrong with your device. It may simply mean that an adjustment is needed.

Pay Attention to Changes in Fit

Signs that your prosthesis or orthosis may need attention include:

  • New areas of redness or irritation

  • Increased pressure or discomfort

  • Changes in how securely your device fits

  • Difficulty putting on or removing your device

  • New instability while walking or moving

  • Increased fatigue when using your device

If you're experiencing ongoing discomfort, don't assume you simply need to "get used to it." Your device should support your daily activities, not make them harder.

Getting Outside With Your Prosthesis or Orthosis

Fall is a great time to enjoy outdoor activities in Central Florida. Whether you're walking through a local park, attending a fall festival, traveling, or spending time with family, your prosthesis or orthosis should help you participate comfortably.

Before increasing your activity level, make sure your device is functioning properly and that you have appropriate footwear for the activities you plan to enjoy.

Don't Forget About Your Feet and Skin

Fall activities can mean more time on your feet. Take regular breaks and inspect your skin after using your prosthesis or orthosis, especially if you're increasing your walking distance or trying a new activity.

Small areas of irritation can become bigger problems if they're ignored.

When Should You Schedule a Prosthetic or Orthotic Check?

If your device feels different, your activity level has changed, or you're experiencing discomfort, an evaluation can help determine whether your device needs an adjustment, repair, or another solution.

At Integrity Prosthetics & Orthotics, our goal is to help patients stay comfortable, active, and confident throughout every season.

Don't let discomfort keep you from enjoying fall. If something doesn't feel right, reach out to your prosthetist or orthotist and have it evaluated.

Ready to Get Back to What You Love?

Your prosthesis or orthosis should work with you — not against you. If you're experiencing discomfort or changes in fit, the team at Integrity Prosthetics & Orthotics can help determine what adjustments may be needed.
