Getting Back Outside: Prosthetic & Orthotic Tips for an Active Summer

As the weather warms up and summer activities pick up, many people are excited to spend more time outdoors — whether that means traveling, exercising, walking more often, enjoying the beach, or simply being active with family and friends.

For individuals using a prosthesis, orthotic brace, or mobility device, increased activity and hotter temperatures can also bring unique challenges. Heat, humidity, sweat, swelling, and changes in activity levels can all affect comfort and mobility during the summer months.

At Integrity Prosthetics & Orthotics, we help patients throughout Central Florida stay comfortable, active, and confident year-round. Here are some important prosthetic and orthotic care tips to help you enjoy an active summer safely and comfortably.

1. Watch for Heat and Sweat Buildup

Florida heat and humidity can quickly lead to excess perspiration inside a prosthetic socket or underneath an orthotic brace. Moisture buildup can increase friction and irritation, which may lead to discomfort, skin breakdown, or sores if not addressed early.

To help manage sweat and heat:

  • Change prosthetic socks regularly if they become damp

  • Clean liners and braces daily

  • Keep skin clean and dry

  • Wear moisture-wicking clothing when possible

  • Take breaks indoors if overheating occurs

If you notice redness, irritation, or skin discomfort that does not improve, it may be time for an adjustment or evaluation.

2. Be Aware of Swelling Changes

Hot weather and increased activity can sometimes cause residual limbs or extremities to swell. Even small changes in limb volume can affect how a prosthetic socket or orthotic device fits.

Signs your fit may need adjustment include:

  • Increased pressure points

  • Looseness or instability

  • Difficulty walking comfortably

  • Skin irritation

  • Changes in alignment or balance

Routine prosthetic adjustments and follow-up appointments are especially important during active summer months when your activity levels may increase.

3. Ease Into Summer Activities

After spending more time indoors during cooler months, it is important to gradually increase activity levels rather than jumping into long walks, vacations, or outdoor events too quickly.

Whether you use a lower limb prosthesis, AFO brace, KAFO, or another orthotic device, pacing yourself can help prevent soreness and fatigue.

Some great low-impact summer activities include:

  • Walking trails

  • Swimming or water therapy

  • Light biking

  • Family outings

  • Community events

  • Stretching and mobility exercises

Staying active can improve strength, balance, circulation, and overall confidence.

4. Check Your Skin Daily

Daily skin checks are one of the most important parts of prosthetic and orthotic care — especially during summer.

Increased sweating and friction can cause:

  • Blisters

  • Rashes

  • Pressure sores

  • Skin irritation

  • Redness or breakdown

Inspect your skin every day for any unusual changes. Catching small issues early can help prevent larger complications later.

If discomfort persists, your prosthetist or orthotist may recommend adjustments to improve fit and reduce pressure.

5. Prepare for Summer Travel

Travel season often means more walking, longer days, and less predictable routines. Preparing ahead of time can make traveling with a prosthesis or orthotic device much easier.

Helpful travel tips include:

  • Pack extra prosthetic socks and liners

  • Bring cleaning supplies

  • Carry backup sleeves or components if possible

  • Wear comfortable, supportive footwear

  • Plan breaks during long walking days

  • Stay hydrated

If you have concerns about fit or comfort before a trip, scheduling an appointment beforehand can help prevent problems while traveling.

6. Don’t Ignore Small Changes in Comfort

Sometimes patients assume discomfort is simply part of being more active during summer — but even small fit issues can become larger problems over time.

If you notice:

  • Increased pain

  • New pressure areas

  • Changes in walking patterns

  • Difficulty wearing your device comfortably

  • Loose or tight fit changes

…it is important to have your device evaluated.

At Integrity Prosthetics & Orthotics, our team provides personalized prosthetic and orthotic care designed to help patients stay mobile, comfortable, and independent throughout every season.
